Longarm Quilting Services

Instructions to Prepare for Long Arm Quilting

To assure a quality finished product, please follow these guidelines:

  •  Keep quilt top, backing and batting (if supplied) separate.

  • No need to provide batting as it is part of the price of long arm quilting. Four options available.

Ensure the Quilt Top is

  • pressed and lays flat to prevent puckering when quilted.

  • squared up and trimmed to its final size so the quilting will line up.
    • When you measure your quilt, the length of each side and the center should all be equal.
    • A discrepancy of more than an inch or so among these three measurements can result in pleats or puckers in the body or borders of the quilt.

  • free of  threads as they may show through, especially if the fabric is light coloured.  Loose threads can cause uneven stitching, snagging, damage our machine or even damage your quilt.

  • sewn together so seams are secure and fully closed so holes won’t open up later.

  • clear of all pins, buttons, snaps, sequins as they could damage your quilt or the machine.

  • labeled if the top is directional (use pencil).

Ensure the Backing is:

  • of similar colour to the quilt top so that it wont show thru the batting.

  • squared up - ripping the fabric will help to ensure the fabric is on grain. Check that the top and bottom edges are parallel with each other and the corners create a 90-degree angle.

  • measured – it must be at least 8-10 inches longer and 6-8 inches wider than the quilt top to enable us to connect the backing to the machine leaders.

  • of equal quality to the quilt top (cotton with cotton, good quality minky, fireside or cuddle that have low stretch, anti-pill fleece).

  • prewashed if the fabric is flannel, heavily starched or a dark/intense color to prevent bleeding.

  • pieced together with fabric selvedges cut off in the areas that will be inside the quilted area to prevent skipped stitches and needle breakage. Ok to leave selvages on sides that will eventually be trimmed after quilting.

  • pressed to prevent wrinkles from being quilted into the stitching.

Contact us by phone at 902-719-3030 or 902-518-2543 or via email at jill@quiltopiacanada.ca to arrange a convenient time to arrange to drop off your quilt. Please do not come to the studio without an appointment.

We are located at 19 Pentz Road, Pleasantville NS (just outside Bridgewater before the Lahave Bakery).

We may eventually may add pick-up service for outlying areas around the south shore of Nova Scotia.

Please bring your quilt in a clear plastic bag.

When you drop off your quilt we will confirm the details such as the:

  • quilt story (who the quilt is for, how it is planned to be used)
  • measurements of top, backing and batting
  • quilting pantograph pattern (refer to Quilt Design Catalog pdf below)
  • thread choice(s)
  • batting selection
  • preferred completion date
  • Other services needed (binding, squaring/piecing backing etc)

We can offer advice,  however the ultimate decision on the quilting pattern and thread colour are the responsibility of the customer.

We will advise you of the fixed price for your quilt so you know the cost up front.  No deposit required for Standard Edge to Edge Quilting Services.  50% deposit may be requested for any Custom Quilting.

We will reach out by email or telephone to let you know your quilt is ready and set up an appointment to pick it up at the studio.

Payment is due prior to your quilt being released. We accept cash or e-transfer to jill@quiltopiacanada.ca.

If you are happy with our work and the service provided, please tell others. If you are not happy with the results, please tell us and we will do everything we can to make it right.  Please refer to our policies at https://quiltopiacanada.ca/policies

Long Arm Quilting - Questions and Answers

What machine do you use?

Quiltopia Canada purchased a new

APQS 26" Millie.  The 12 foot frame enables us to handle even the biggest quilts.  Computerized quilting delivers consistent and high quality quilting that will stand the test of time.  While the machine can be operated manually for custom work, we only offer standard edge-to-edge quilting.

How much does it cost?

Standard Edge-to-Edge Quilting services includes the cost of thread and tax.

Quiltopia Canada offers Pellon batting for longarm quilting services at cost and sells the batting by the meter for clients that want to take batting home for other projects.

Quilters may supply their own batting  for long arm quilting but it must be clean, large enough and good quality.

Please call 902-719-3030 or email jill@quiltopiacanada.ca to make an appointment as we are not a quilt shop.

What are the quilting options?

Quiltopia Canada has a library of quilting  design options available that are included in the cost of long arm services.  (refer to Quilting Design Catalog pdf above)

Looking for something specific? Please discuss your ideas with Jill@QuiltopiaCanada.ca who can suggest options.   We would be happy to select a pattern for you to complement your quilt.  It helps us to know the story for the quilt including who the quilt is for, the intended use, special occasion, theme etc.

Alternatively, you may browse the Urban Elementz online catalog to select a quilting design. This is a popular website: https://www.urbanelementz.com/catalog-pantograph-download.html

If you find a design that you want that we don't own, then we can purchase the pattern and may charge a small one-time fee.

What makes a great quilting design?

- patterns that are very linear may highlight inconsistencies in sewing, conflict with directional fabrics or be difficult to align with the quilt blocks.

- patterns that are very dense in some areas and lightly quilted in other areas may result in poor quality long term.  Empty spaces should not be any larger your fist or about two square inches.

- Patterns nest well together between rows and repeats are not overly noticeable.
